Social Media is turning out to be the newest, most effective weapons in spreading antisemitism. Suddenly, everyone has an audience and is an expert.
I am guilty for using social media platforms. But, unlike most of those sharing information, I actually have a degree in journalism, awards in professional writing and have been recognized for my work and effectiveness in educating the public with facts backed up with documentation and witnesses.
Scrolling through one of the popular outlets, I found a post that I initially found interesting. I pressed the link to see the entire article. The headline started by stating antisemites need to be voted out of congress. Most were squad members and recognizable Democrats. Three Republicans were mentioned, Thomas Massie, Dr. Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Massie has an inconsistent record on Israel. However, as someone who knows Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene, I can promise you they are NOT antisemites. In fact, quite the opposite.
Let me start with Congressman Dr. Paul Gosar.
Now, we talk about college antisemitism. Gosar actually did something about it. On February 27, 2019, Gosar sent a letter to Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos concerning the University of Arizona’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), raising concerns that it is supporting “biased, anti-American, pro-BDS” faculty and research and accepting considerable sums of money from foreign sources, specifically Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Gosar’s letter asks that the University of Arizona’s Title VI-funded programs be scrutinized for possible violations of that section of the Higher Education Act.
In July 2019, Gosar supported the The U.S. House of Representatives voted 398-17 to approve resolution H.Rres 246 opposing the global boycott movement against Israel. In October, he voted in support of Israel against Hamas.
Marjorie Taylor Greene is harder to defend because she has a long history of “putting her foot into her mouth” offending even many Republican Jewish donors and supporters. And now, November 2nd, she voted “no” for additional funding for Israel.
In her official statement, Greene stated, “the reason why I voted no today and not that I’ll always be a no for Israel’s defense is because I’m unapologetically America first.”
Her alternative idea is to defund countries that harbor terrorists like Hamas and send that money to Israel instead.
However, Greene is one hundred percent the leader of censorship against Tlaib and anyone else who is an elected representative of “The Squad” engages in antisemitic activity. She faced censorship herself multiple times.
Both Gosar and Greene have several common connections their opponents use as “tools” to prove their bias opinions in order to sway away support and donors. They both opposed the results of the 2020 election. They both are tied to Trump, MAGA and far right patriots. Most of us, if we support America First, are also. If they appear at a rally or are listed on a flier with a public figure from the Proud Boys, then it’s assumed their antisemitic and against Israel.
I am guilty of appearing as a speaker with extreme right promoters. Does that make me an antisemite?
These two elected officials prove their support by a history of legislation. At a time of questioning who is Jewish or Jew-ish, I would rather have these two on my team than the radicals on the left who prove allegiance to Hamas.
I always say the best Jew in Washington DC is Senator Ted Cruz. It’s not Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler or Richard Blumenthal. It’s not Alejandro Mayorkas or Janet Yellen.
Before calling people antisemites, influencers should do their homework. Get off that phone and pray for the hostages, Israel and Jews around the world.
