Despite the rise to power of conservative leader Giorgia Meloni last year, Italy has seen a migration crisis like never before.
Lampedusa has seen an influx of migrants, with 7,000 people arriving in just two days, prompting its mayor and the United Nations refugee agency to warn that the Italian island is becoming overwhelmed.
Mayor Filippo Mannino on Thursday, told Italy’s RTL 102.5 radio “In the past 48 hours, around 7,000 people have arrived on my island”, he said the migrant crisis had reached a critical juncture, “Now we have reached a point of no return where the role played by this small rock in the middle of the Mediterranean has been put into crisis by the dramatic nature of this phenomenon.”
What is really happening and why is the current government not in control of the immigration flow?
When it comes to the management of immigration, most fail to realize that border and security controls fall under the common policies of the European Union.
Therefore, the “autonomy” many politicians claim at the national level to resolve immigration crises, doesn’t reflect member states’ obligations to comply with Bruxelles directives on the matter.
While national political campaigns emphasize the need for border controls, most forget to address that the response to such needs passes through the EU. On the other hand, though, member states have control over their seas and could implement measures to control and redirect migrant ships BEFORE they reach land.
Unfortunately, though, profitable businesses have been built upon “nonprofit” NGOs and there is no interest in effectively eradicating the financial exploitation of illegal immigration.
The deputy prime minister and minister of Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, stated “I think that some foreign countries are financing associations that contribute to this migratory flow.” The leader of the Lega, in particular, believes that Germany is funding NGOs to send migrants to Italy.
De facto, the EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE on migration, oversees the distribution of “quotas” of immigrants between the member states, therefore the redirection from one country to another is legally possible. The real problem is that the European Union neglected to implement its repartition of quota in a rational and feasible fashion.
Once again the ineffective EU construction impacts the lives of millions of citizens.
Illegal immigration is not only a humanitarian issue but it deeply affects the safety of many Italian citizens, exposed to the abuses committed by people our country has nothing to offer, and that, in too many cases, live off crimes as a result.
A cultural and geopolitical shock is forcing the land of “God, family and country” to confront the consequences of globalization and the dependence, de juri and de facto, from the dictates of “mother Europe”. The national and cultural identity and most importantly the “sacred safety “ so long preserved, seems corroded by criminal escalations and the normalization of abnormal situations in the name of “political correctness“ and as a result of a total lack of self-sufficiency when it comes to making Italy the priority.
The world looks up to leaders like Donald Trump simply for having done what they promised. Accountability matters. The new world dream made in USA!
